Our younger daughter had her Bat Mitzvah on an IDT 12 day tour last summer and I am just getting around to posting my review. In one word: AMAZING!
I did a ton of research into every tour company before deciding on Israel Discovery Tours (IDT) and I am so glad that we picked them. I'm the sole trip planner in the family and this was our very first experience with group travel. I cannot stress enough how wonderful it was to turn over all of the planning and logistics to IDT and just relax and experience the joy and wonder of Israel and my daughter's Bat Mitzvah.
One difference that I think mattered most was IDT's smaller size. We had only one tour bus with 7 families. We received extraordinary personalized attention both before and during the trip. Brad in the Chicago office answered every question and went above and beyond to make special arrangements to bring our older daughter from her BBYO teen tour in Jerusalem to the Bat Mitzvah ceremony and back again to her tour. In Israel IDT's dedicated staff made each family feel special and cared for. We had a wonderful tour guide Ami, a fantastic bus driver Moishe and a fabulous hostess named Muriel, whose job was to make sure that EVERYTHING ran smoothly -- including ensuring that all dietary concerns and allergy restrictions were considered at every meal. This was a big relief given my daughter's limited diet. No request was too big or too small for the IDT crew.
The Bat Mitzvah ceremony itself was held at sunrise in a private ceremony at Masada. The rabbi met with the children before-hand and the service was moving and individualized. While the families all attended together, each child read his or her own portion from the Torah accompanied by their family. It was beautiful morning.
The 12 day itinerary was simply jammed packed with a balance of historical, educational and just fun activities to satisfy kids, parents and grandparents. I feel like every inch of Israel was covered, with unique experiences sprinkled throughout. You will see all of the Must-See sites as on the other tours, but they also go a bit off the beaten path. You can visit the IDT website to see the wonderful itinerary; they stick to it and it is fast paced! You will be tired after this vacation and look back and wonder how they possibly fit it all in. You're up early and touring ALL day. This is a great tour for an active family. We loved the pace but some younger children or elderly might not be up for it.
The hotels were also top notch. IDT chose great options for accommodations in each location: Waldorf Astoria in Jerusalem (King David on 15 day tour); Leonardo Plaza, Tiberias; Isrotel, Dead Sea; Hilton Eilat, Queen of Sheba; and Hilton Tel Aviv. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah banquet also took place at the Hilton Tel Aviv and it was a fun celebration.
My family carries amazing memories from our IDT trip and we feel a strong and lasting connection to Israel. We feel so lucky that we celebrated this milestone in Israel and I truly wish that everyone could be fortunate enough to partake in such an extraordinary experience!

Israel Discovery Tours offers three Value departures a year for our adult travelers. The Value Tours uses the identical itinerary as the Deluxe Tours; the only difference being the selection of hotels. We use the best hotels in their class in terms of quality and location including: The Inbal Hotel Jerusalem, Isrotel Ganim Dead Sea, Herods Palace Eilat, Galei Kinnereth Tiberias, and The David Intercontinental Tel Aviv. All of these hotels offer the level of service and comfort for which our tour is famous at a more moderate price.
After five nights in Jerusalem, the group will travel to the Dead Sea to have an unsinkable swim and spend the night at the lowest place on Earth. From there, it's on to the southernmost point in Israel - the resort city of Eilat. A much needed break in the middle of the tour, we have a fantastic lunch cruise with snorkeling on the Red Sea and plenty of time to enjoy the beaches or the spa facilities at the hotel. In order to avoid long bus ride, we fly north from Eilat to continue our tour in the Galilee. The tour will end in Israel's most modern city; Tel Aviv. Our passengers will have time to reflect on their two weeks exploring the history of Israel and the Jewish people and they will experience the future of Israel in this exciting metropolis.
On Saturday night the group will celebrate at our festive Farewell Gala Banquet, complete with great food, music and dancing. We will share our experiences, have a good laugh and a good cry and, at the end of the night, we will all hold hands as one and sing “Hatikvah” The Hope. And although this journey of discovery will come to an end, the impressions, memories and connection to Israel will never end.
Good Morning or as we say in Israel “Boker Tov”!
It’s very early in Israel, but our families are well rested and anxious to start this most special day. Today the children will be Bar/Bat Mitzvah and all the families are buzzing with excitement. They've enjoyed a good night’s sleep at the luxurious Isrotel Dead Sea. Situated on the shores of the sea, the hotel is only a 10 minute drive to Masada. By staying overnight, we have eliminated the long drive from Jerusalem to be atop Masada before it’s too hot! After extensive touring in Jerusalem, the families have had a wonderful time "floating" in the Dead Sea and enjoying the scenery, the hotel and the mud!
Our September 1st Adults Only Tour has arrived in Israel and they wanted to say "Shalom" from their Welcome Dinner at the fabulous 5 star deluxe King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Our passengers travel to Israel from all across the United States. They don’t fly as a group from a specified airport on mandatory flights; rather they depart from their closest and most convenient airport and are met and assisted by our staff at Ben Gurion Airport and transferred to our first hotel. Flight arrangements are made upon request. Deviations are never a problem and we never charge a penalty! Upon arrival at the hotel, our passengers are greeted and assisted by our Israel Discovery Tours hostess.
Tonight our group is going to want say "Lilah tov - Good Night" early. The wakeup call will come before they know it as there is so much to see in Jerusalem. The Old City, The Western Wall, Hadassah Hospital & the famous Chagall Windows, a “hands on” Archaeological Dig and Mt. Herzl are just some of the sights our groups will visit. At Yad Vashem, Israel's Memorial to the Holocaust, our group will participate in a very special and moving memorial service. On Friday evening they will welcome Shabbat and enjoy a wonderful dinner together at the hotel. Anyone will tell you, there is nothing more special than celebrating Shabbat in Jerusalem! Saturday, since it is a day of rest, everyone will sleep a little bit later and after breakfast it's time for a fascinating walking tour of the Old City including King David’s Citadel, the Museum of Jerusalem and the Bazaar.
You can see from the video below that our passengers are always so excited at the Welcome Dinner knowing that on Israel Discovery Tours they are going to see all of Israel.
